Health Promotion and Wellness - Outstanding Leadership Awards

MSAD 22

Superintendent Rick Lyons proudly speaks about the longevity of the SAD 22’s Wellness Team which was formed in 1991. The superintendent refers to the long-term efforts that have become part of the “fabric” of the educational community in SAD 22.

The administrative team supports wellness in the workplace and states it has become an expected mode of operation. For example, the interview process for prospective employees includes questions about wellness. Wellness has been on the district’s agenda on a consistent basis and through this persistence, has ensured sustainability.

SAD 22’s School Board believes wellness should be infused into the workplace. This is reflected in the board’s goals. In 1994, the Tobacco Policy was approved, followed by the approval of a Nutrition Policy that sites research and best practices. Their nutrition policy was featured in Making It Happen, School Nutrition Success Stories, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Healthier vending options have been available to staff and students since the beginning of the 2002 school year.

The district allocates over $39,000 in wellness incentives annually to all employees that

do no use more than 3 sick days the previous year. The district started with 34% of the staff and most recently the number was increased to 76%. Adult Education offers a TOTAL HEALTH track of speakers for 7 weeks of wellness topics. The district wellness team is proud of the most recent opening of a staff fitness center that is available 24/7 for all school employees.

The wellness team assisted the district school health coordinator with a recent health curriculum survey for elementary teachers and met after school to review and look at instructional practices. Tom Ingraham, the middle school principal reported that district wellness team efforts have enhanced the aligned health education curriculum.

The wellness team supported the Personal Responsibility Program, as an alternative to suspension for students that exhibits 2 or more risk factors.

For its far reaching and effective health promotion and wellness efforts that benefits

students and staff, SAD 22 is recognized with this exemplary award.

Chris Greenier & Jo-Ann Barrows
Co-Leaders of the Wellness Team

Chris and Jo-Ann are currently the co-leaders of the SAD 22 Wellness Team. Chris is the SAD 22 Food Service Director and Jo-Ann is the Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent. Over the years, Chris and Jo-Ann have shaped and molded wellness into the school culture for staff, students and the community. They have utilized their positions to create a positive evolution in the school lunch program and the wellness infrastructure of SAD 22. People identify wellness with their presence. Their continuity of leadership has sustained programs and activities for wellness throughout the district.

John Plourde
Health Education Teacher

John is the health educator at Hampden Academy. He played an integral role in initiating a coordinated school health concept in SAD 22. As the School Health Coordinator, he polled students, faculty, support staff, administration and the community to develop strategies that put safety, health promotion, and a healthy school climate as top priorities in the mission of the district. John secured grant money for wellness initiatives and helped create a strong union between the existing wellness team and the coordinated school health program.

Richard Lyons
Superintendent

Rick is the current Superintendent of Schools in SAD 22. He has been a very strong advocate for a healthy school culture for employees and students. Rick provides strong and stable administrative support for wellness initiatives and issues for SAD 22. Rick’s commitment to wellness led him to advocate for SAD 22 to be a Healthy Maine Partnerships grant site for coordinated school health. This grant has allowed SAD 22 to broaden the scope and sequence of health promotion and elevated wellness opportunities for students, staff and community. For his longstanding support and involvement in health promotion we are proud to present Rick with this outstanding leadership award.
