2005 Excellence in Coordinated School Health Recognition Awards Program Winner Health Promotion and Wellness - Outstanding Leadership Awards MSAD 75 There is strong administrative support for health promotion and wellness in SAD 75 for staff and students. Superintendent Michael Wilhelm is a role model for good health practices in SAD 75 and advocates daily to raise the consciousness of health status and issues within the district. Increased physical activity is part of the 2004-2005 wellness team action plan and team members piloted the TAKE TIME initiative to incorporate more physical activity during the school day in the elementary schools. With district-wide implementation of the Take Time Pilot, Superintendent Wilhelm runs around the middle school joining the students and staff in their 30 minutes of physical activity. In addition to TAKE TIME in the lower grades, high school students are taking Physical Activity breaks during their 90 minute instructional blocks. Superintendent Wilhelm encourages the administrative team to take a break or take walks during the day to help alleviate stress, and stated that SAD 75’s school board is a ‘health literate’ and highly informed board that is highly supported of school health policies and programs. The Human Resources Director is implementing an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) at the district’s expense to address the health needs of staff. The EAP was initiated and supported by the district’s wellness team. Another source of pride is the Fitness Surveillance System, a local data collection that is a collaborative effort of the physical education specialists working with school nurses to gather height and weight data for students in grades 3 and 6. In addition, student fitness levels are used to calculate individual Body Mass Index. SAD 75 is committed to a district wide health promotion and wellness program for all their students and staff and for this reason is most deserving of this exemplary award. Karen Kilmer Karen is a “driving force” behind S.A.D. 75’s Wellness Team and has been an active participant for over four years. She has served as the Team Leader for many Schoolsite Health Promotion Conference delegations and always returns from the Conference with a well crafted and focused action plan for the following school year. Karen was instrumental in obtaining a grant from the Maine Dairy and Nutrition Council that helped place a milk vending machine in our Middle School thus making dairy products available for healthy snacking after school hours. Congratulations for receiving this outstanding leadership award. Moe St. Pierre Moe is always “front and center” when there is a nutrition issue to consider. He is a very active member of both the District Wellness Team and the School Health Leadership Team. Moe has been involved in SAD 75’s Price Differential Project (soda was priced up to $1.25 and water was priced down to $.50), our Community Nutrition Forum, and the creation of our District Vending Policy that states soda and junk food are no longer sold in school vending machines. We congratulate Moe for all these contributions. Colleen Rioux Colleen has served on the SAD 75’s Wellness Team and is currently a member of our School Health Leadership Team. She is a tireless advocate for health and wellness among both students and staff. Colleen is so strongly committed to personal wellness that she volunteers her time to personally train any District employee who would like to learn how to use the equipment in the Middle School Fitness Center. Colleen is well respected among her peers in Maine and served on the Governor’s Commission to Study Public Health. Her motto is “Let’s do it… just for the health of it!” It is our honor to present this outstanding leadership award to Colleen. |
