2005 Excellence in Coordinated School Health Recognition Awards Program Winner School Counseling, Physical and Behavioral Health Services Outstanding Leadership Awards Old Orchard Beach School Department In Old Orchard Beach Schools there is an expressed dedication from school administration to the provision of physical and behavioral health services as integral to the school’s mission. The staff communicates well and have developed an informal method of staff to staff and staff to administration communication. They maintain good relationships, respect for each other and teamwork. Old Orchard Beach maintains a ratio of health services staff to students that benefits all students. Effective planning for and implementation of health programs have a clear “student focus.” The transition plan for students moving from elementary to middle to high school levels, identifies issues and directs attention to making the transition a smooth one. School policies related to health services meet all aspects of students’ need. Families and community members are invited to be involved with school activities. Old Orchard Beach has a Student Assistance Team program that is strong and is the center of addressing student needs for those who may be at-risk. There is strong leadership and connections within the Coordinated School Health Program. Principal Mike Pulsifer states that in order to address academic issues, it is important to “treat the whole child.” For their commitment to the health of all students, we award Old Orchard Beach with this exemplary award for school counseling and physical and behavioral health services. Jackie Tselikis, School Health Coordinator As a former school nurse, Jackie brings experience and professionalism to Old Orchard Beach’s coordinated school health program. She chairs the Nutrition Team, School/Community Crisis and Safe Team, School Health Advisory Team, and is involved with school wellness and health promotion efforts throughout the district. She works to build a school and community environment that supports healthy students, staff, and families and has been instrumental in changing local policies by networking with administrators and staff. As a member of several state and local committees she brings Best Practices Research to our schools. Karen Ledew, School Nurse Karen is the school nurse for Loranger Middle School and Old Orchard Beach High School, serving the health care needs for over 800 students with special health needs. Karen plays a key role as a promoter of health and wellness in Old Orchard Beach’s coordinated approach to school health. Her office is a safe place for students to talk about substance abuse, family problems, eating disorders and other issues. Matt Michaud, School Social Worker Matt is the social worker at Loranger Middle School. Matt has designed and implemented a comprehensive school counseling program that includes individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and parent and family counseling and also collaborates with health services staff, teachers and administrators. Matt works with the Pupil Services Team to serve students and families. Matt understands the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to health and behavioral issues and works as a team member to provide services to his students. |
