2006 Excellence in Coordinated School Health Recognition Awards Program Winner
Health Education

Calais School Department

Health education is alive and well in Calais schools. Administrators understand the need and importance of health education and give it tremendous support. Calais teachers have a commitment and dedication to the teaching of health education. In Calais schools there is a pervasive valuing of health education in the total curriculum and a belief that it is very important for their students.

The health education curriculum committee includes representation from elementary, middle and high school and, even though the curriculum is completed, the committee continues to meets regularly. Professional development is provided and teachers coordinate health education within the grades and with the curriculum coordinator and school health coordinator.

There is strong evidence of health education, K- High School. Classrooms showcase student work with posters, collages and brochures. Their health education classes are hands-on and interactive and integrate lessons with other academic subjects.

Health education is on the report card at every grade, K – 8, and performance tasks are utilized to assess student achievement. Students are required to have one full credit of health education for high school graduation.

At the high school students address a variety of health issues including, nutrition, physical activity, tobacco prevention, suicide and injury prevention, and harassment and dating violence prevention.

Students receive reinforcing messages throughout the school. Calais conducts a Health Fair each year for elementary school students and a Health Issues Day for middle and high school students.

The Calais School Department was the first system in the county to institute a healthy foods vending machine policy, including no soda or candy in the teachers’ facility vending machine.

Congratulations to Calais School Department for receiving the 2006 Exemplary Award in Health Education.
