Question 1:
Are there specific guidelines as to how the Comprehensive School Health Education grant money is to be spent?  Do you have suggestions for those of us who are wondering?

Answer:
Informational Letter No. 95 provides a list of authorized expenditures on the second page. The list is provided below.

Authorized Expenditures
The funds may be used only for the following activities:

  • Stipend for Health Education coordinator and/or health education curriculum committee members.
  • Substitute Pay for (1) health education curriculum and assessment development and (2) professional development for those educators responsible for teaching health education.
  • Professional development for comprehensive school health education (no maximum) and schoolsite health promotion or other coordinated school health programs (maximum of $500.00).
  • Purchase resources to support the health education curriculum.
  • Development of materials for comprehensive health education curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
  • Community/family programs related to health education.

Question 2:
We are a private Christian school, do we qualify for funding (even though we obviously received the notice)?

Answer:
Please see Informational Letter No. 95.

As you can see in the application for the Maine Department of Education Comprehensive School Health Education Grant, the focus of the work is on the health education standards in Maine's Learning Results. Maine public schools are required to follow the Learning Results and private state approved schools are not.  The funds are limited and will be awarded to those schools that follow the state-mandated requirements.
