A Guide to Linking Key Concepts
This document was developed by professionals representing the following state level departments:
Maine Department of Education, Maine Department of Behavioral and Developmental Services, Maine Bureau of Health, Maine Nutrition Network, Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and Family Planning Association of Maine.
It has been reviewed and revised by an expert review panel consisting of Maine Department of Education consultants, school health coordinators and grade level teachers.
The key concepts are written specifically for the designated content area; not general concepts that could be related across content areas. The following criteria were used during the revision process. Key concepts must be:
Introduction
This document links key concepts in nutrition education, tobacco use prevention, alcohol and other drug use prevention and a draft version of family life education, physical activity, and sexual assault prevention to the health education standards and performance indicators outlined in Maine's Learning Results.
All key concepts are linked to the performance indicators at four grade spans: Pre K - 2, 3 - 4, 5 - 8, and Secondary.
Each set of key concepts are not intended to be used separately but included in the comprehensive health education program.
The target audience for this document is the health education curriculum committee. The key concepts listed in the document should not be considered a curriculum. This document is a guide to be used when developing or revising the curriculum. Committees should use their best judgment when deciding which key concepts should be included in their health education curriculum.
