Creating and Maintaining a Tobacco-Free School Policy
This resource guide is part of an ongoing initiative by the Partnership For A Tobacco-Free Maine (PTM), a program within the Maine Bureau of Health, Department of Health and Human Services. The intent of the initiative is to introduce the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations for tobacco-free school policy to Maine schools and communities. As indicated in the guide, school administrative units that meet four of the CDC recommendations for tobacco-free school policy cited by PTM will receive free signage packets for all schools in the SAU. The guide also provides the complete CDC Guidelines for School Health Programs to Prevent Tobacco Use and Addiction, compelling reasons for developing a tobacco-free school environment, steps in advocating for tobacco-free policy, Maine laws regarding tobacco possession by youth, sample tobacco-free policies and additional national resources.
